Molten Land - 2 day Forest Casting Workshop
Fully outdoors • Elemental • Low-tech metal casting
Molten Land is an immersive two-day workshop held entirely in the forest with Creative Nature. Over one weekend, participants learn to cast pewter using fire, sand, natural textures and improvised woodland tools — a raw, intuitive making experience shaped by the land itself.
Day 1 — Cuttlefish Pewter Casting in the Woods
We begin beneath the trees with charcoal fires, hand tools and the scent of burning cuttlefish.
Participants will:
- Carve forms into cuttlefish bone
- Learn to melt pewter safely over charcoal
- Pour pewter in a forest setting
- Produce detailed casts with natural, organic textures
Day 2 — Forest Casting with Found Materials
The second day opens out into sand moulds pressed directly from woodland textures and objects.
Participants will:
- Build and maintain charcoal fires hot enough for pewter
- Press moulds into sand using bark, carved wood, stones and found patterns
- Pour molten pewter into open-face moulds
- Create intuitive casts shaped directly by the forest environment
What you’ll make:
Across the two days, each participant will create:
- A series of pewter cuttlefish casts
- Experimental open-sand casts inspired by natural textures
- A small collection of forest-forged objects
Who it’s for:
Artists, makers, nature-lovers, and anyone curious about low-tech casting.
No experience necessary.
Includes:
All pewter, cuttlefish, sand, charcoal, tools, safety gear, and hot drinks.
Hosted fully outdoors with Stephen Stockbridge and Giles Corby, come together to deliver 35 years’ experience creating sculpture.
