Weaving Workshop

£50.00

Join Ashanti in exploring the wonderful world of weaving.

Dating back 27,000 years ago, weaving is one of the oldest textile crafts. The repetitive nature of weaving is a calming practice that allows you to really dive into the making. Weaving over time and knowing you have made the fabric from scratch is an incredibly rewarding process that keeps a cultural heritage alive.

Using different sized frame looms and a wide variety of yarn, you will be guided to make your own individual piece to take home with you. This could be a wall hanging, coaster, bookmark, patches - anything you’d like to make will be supported.

Ashanti will guide you throughout the day, offering support, tips and tricks. Great for beginners and more advanced.

What you will learn about:

  • The loom function and names of each part of the loom

  • Basic weave structures

  • How to warp a frame loom with tension

  • How to create different textures on both looms

  • Different yarns/fibers and sustainability

  • Other examples of woven fabrics

What you will take away with you:

  • Information sheets

  • Any individual notes you might take

  • Hand woven samples you have made

  • New knowledge about hand woven fabric, yarns, fibers, sustainability within weaving

  • Weaving book recommendations

What to bring:

  • Packed lunch

  • All equipment provided, including frame looms, yarns, information sheets and hand woven samples. You are welcome to bring your own yarn or scrap fabric if you would like to.

Location:

This workshop is carried out at “The Clearing”, an outdoor purpose-built creative space in Lesnes Abbey Woods.

Find us on Google Maps: The Clearing, Lesnes Abbey Woods, Belvedere, SE2 0AX

Toilets are a 5 minute walk away at Lesnes Abbey Lodge.

Whatever the weather, the workshop will proceed, except under high wind conditions or lightning.

This workshop will take place under a canopy, using stalls and mats on the floor. Participants must be comfortable to work on the floor and use backless seating. You are welcome to bring your own more suitable chair if you need. If working on the floor is not possible, we may be able to accommodate with a table - please get in touch with us via email if this is the case, at contactcreativenature@gmail.com, or with any other questions.

We are keen to be able to accommodate everyone at our workshops as best as possible.

We look forward to meeting you in the woods!
